Storyum was established in 2011 by JJ. The band’s sound is electro-disco metal and symphonic metal. Band members are JJ on guitar; Ra, vocals; Tie on Bass and Nes on drums. The band has released two albums. The first album titled Insomnia was published in 2012 by RavenHeart Music and the second album, We Are The Fire, was published in 2018 by Musicarchy Media.
Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the “catalyst” for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
Every musician starts his or her carrier learning to play songs from known artists. When a musician is young this is absolutely normal. But there are lots of musicians who became almost professionals on his or her instrument and started to play in a revival band. My worst nightmare was to play songs from other artists for my whole life. So I decided to start writing songs. In the beginning it was a very hard challenge, but today the songwriting is like breathing to me.
Let’s get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
Thank God, there were a lot of crazy things in my musical era, it’s hard to tell only one story. The most memorable was, when I went to a talent show with a band. I had to go to the toilet before our show and I found there our bass player, who was my best friend too. He was standing and peeing. I stood behind him and started to hit his ass as hard as I could. At that moment the sound engineer opened the door, took a look on us and said “Whoops, I’m so sorry guys, I’ll leave you two alone!” and ran away. It was embarassing as hell, but in the end we won the talent show.
What has been the high point of your music path?
Couple of years ago I had a R&R band, I was the drummer there. We played more than 200 gigs in one year only with this one band. Every gig was full house. At the same time I had 9 more (mostly blues) bands. So there was a day when I had to play 3 gigs in a row. I was young and I needed money.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
There are two ways for me. Either I close my eyes and start to play the guitar, or I start to find some cool VST. When I discover something special, I find myself noticing that few hours had passed and a demo of a song is recorded on my computer.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
I think the biggest challenge for Indie Artists is the unconcern of the audience. They don’t have to do anything if they want to listen to music. If a song is not placed in front of their nose they don’t want to search to find something new. This is absolutely understandable. There are bands which have the money to get to the house of the listener, there are a lot of bands which should never exist. There are a lot of bands who are so bad, if somebody listens to them he or she never wants to hear another band who is not a big star. The solution would be, if a band wants to make its own music it has to obtain an international licence. And the pigs might fly.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
It would be David Gilmour. For me he is the biggest legend. It would be a pleasure to taste that feeling of his guitar solos on the stage.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
We are working very hard if it’s about the rehearsals. Everybody must be on time, if somebody arrives late it is sanctioned. Of course during the breaks we make fun too. If we are practicing not only the music but the whole show with dancers, lights and sound system we are entering the rehearsal room and we are able to practice the whole day.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
When I write music I like to see the song globally. It means I have to write the drums, the guitars, the bass, the keyboards, the melodies and everything else what we use in our music. For example in our upcoming song called Love Song there is almost 100 tracks (of course drums are 16 tracks, guitars 10 tracks, but there are a lot of instruments), so the greatest challenge is to take care about harmonies and not to write secundes there. This is the greatest challenge in every song I write.
