Clever animation joyfully buoys the clip the singer co-directed
Bruno Mars has unveiled the new video for “That’s What I Like.” Hailing from his recently released album 24K Magic, the song marks his first Number One on the Hot R&B Songs Billboard chart.
The singer began teasing that he had “something awesome” to unveil via social media on Wednesday. At first he denied it was a video for the song, but later he confirmed it before the clip arrived. “Just finished shootin it! I’m gonna edit it, take a bubble bath & then we party,” he tweeted. “Gimme 2 hours! Let the count down begin #TWIL.”
In the new clip, a playful and joyous Bruno Mars is seen dancing solo throughout the three-and-a-half-minute video, save for some cleverly drawn animation, which mirrors the lyrics and buoyant music while moving along with him to the well-executed choreography. “I got a condo in Manhattan,” he sings, striking a leaning dance pose and the illustrated visuals follow suit. Champagne glasses, Cadillac wheels, Paris, diamonds and his finger snaps all get the drawn treatment in the playful clip. He didn’t completely forego dancing partners, they show up as animation, too. Mars himself and Jonathan Lia directed the video.
Mars performed “That’s What I Like” during the Grammy Awards show, where he also performed a tribute to Prince with the Time. In July, the singer embarks on the North American leg of his 24K Magic World Tour.
