Game Changer” by Laranah Phipps & La Funkalicious: A Unifying Force in Afro-Future Jazz-Funk

Music has long been a unifying force, capable of bringing people together during times of turmoil and uncertainty. Laranah Phipps Ray, a talented vocalist, songwriter, and producer from New Jersey, aims to achieve just that with her Afro-Future jazz-infused funk band, La Funkalicious, and their latest album, “Game Changer.” Produced by Kym Miller of the renowned band “Instant Funk,” this record seamlessly blends cosmic jazz elements reminiscent of Sun Ra, groovy riffs akin to Nile Rogers, and soulful vocals that pay homage to the golden era of soul-jazz.

One standout track from the album is “Stand Together,” a song penned by Laranah herself. The song captivates listeners from the very beginning with a stunning horn intro arranged by the talented Arnetta Johnson. Tom Littwin’s infectious bass licks and Laranah’s silky-smooth vocals further elevate the track, leading into its powerful call to action. “Stand Together” can be aptly described as a rhythmic, melodic, and inter-dimensional anthem, exemplifying La Funkalicious’ unique blend of AfroFuture Jazz-Funk.

Another notable track on “Game Changer” is the deeply personal “Connie’s Blues,” co-written by Laranah and Daryl Robinson. The album version of the song begins with a sixty-second keyboard intro that evokes a sense of starlight and messages sent into outer space. The drums, bass groove, and vocals then burst forth, propelling the song forward. “Connie’s Blues” pays homage to Laranah’s mother, who tragically lost her life when Laranah was a teenager. The track delves into the complexities of a strong, independent woman’s life, showcasing her mother’s resilience as a source of inspiration.

Laranah Phipps Ray hails from a musical dynasty, as she is the daughter of the legendary saxophonist Gene Phipps Sr., belonging to Newark’s esteemed First Family of Jazz, the Phipps Family. As a songwriter, Laranah has crafted numerous notable compositions, including “I Rule the Night,” “Love in Santiago,” “Sudden Love,” and “Save Me Now.” Her recent collaborations with esteemed artists such as trumpeter Michael Ray and saxophonist Marshall Allen of Sun Ra Arkestra, Kym Miller of Instant Funk, and Kevin Hearn of Barenaked Ladies showcase her versatility and dedication to creating remarkable music.

“Game Changer” by La Funkalicious is an album that embraces the power of music to transcend boundaries and unite people. With its Afro-Future jazz-funk fusion, this record transports listeners to a realm where genres blend effortlessly and creativity knows no bounds. Laranah Phipps Ray and her talented bandmates have crafted a collection of tracks that inspire, uplift, and invite us all to stand together in the face of adversity. This album is a testament to the transformative power of music and the ability of artists to create positive change through their craft.
