Pump It Up Magazine Interview: A Deep Dive with Alwyn Morrison on His Heartfelt Track “Chained”
At Pump It Up Magazine, we’re honored to feature artists who share not only their talent, but also their truth. One such artist is Alwyn Morrison, whose emotionally raw song “Chained” captures the complex and often heartbreaking experience of loving someone battling depression. In this powerful interview, Alwyn dives into the story behind the track, the personal toll it took, and how compassion shaped both the song and his journey.
Pump It Up Magazine: What inspired the song “Chained”?
Alwyn Morrison:
The inspiration behind “Chained” comes from my experience of loving someone who struggles with depression. The line about being ‘in a dark room’ is a reflection of that emotional weight, and how it impacts not just them, but also my own life. It’s about the feeling of never wanting to leave someone behind, but at the same time, being trapped in that struggle with them. Honestly, it’s the most personal song I’ve ever written. I don’t even really remember writing it… It felt like the words had been building up inside me for years. I wrote it during a flight to Europe, and somehow, I fell asleep and woke up, and the song was just there, pouring out everything I had been unable to say for so long.

Pump It Up Magazine: How do you personally deal with the emotions that come from loving someone with depression?
Alwyn Morrison:
Loving someone who is struggling with depression or anxiety can be very challenging, and for me, it often feels like being in a dark room with them, trying to find a way out, but not knowing how. You want so badly to help, but sometimes it feels like you’re just not able to, no matter how hard you try. The hardest part, I guess, is feeling helpless. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that you’re failing. Over time, I’ve learned that just being there, even when it’s hard, is still something. It’s about showing compassion, holding space for them, and not expecting quick fixes. It takes a lot of strength—both with them and with yourself. The emotional toll can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I hope that anyone who has been through something similar can find comfort in knowing they’re not alone in these feelings. Just showing up, in whatever way you can, still matters.
Pump It Up Magazine: What message do you hope listeners take away from the lyrics?
Alwyn Morrison:
We all go through times when we feel stuck or have questions that feel like no one has the answer to. Through the song, I want listeners to feel seen and understood, to connect with the vulnerability of that experience, but also to find a sense of release and hope. Music has been a lifeline for me—it’s helped me through both the toughest times and the happiest moments. If my music can offer the same comfort, reflection, or joy to someone else, then I’ll feel like it’s done its job.

Pump It Up Magazine: Can you tell us a bit about the production and recording process?
Alwyn Morrison:
I recorded “Chained” in Los Angeles at my producer Michael Carey’s studio, who has worked on a few of my past singles as well. This song holds a special place for me because it was the first one I ever recorded. Even though I released other tracks beforehand, this was the first time I actually stepped into the studio and sang into a mic. At the time, I didn’t plan on releasing it; I just needed to express myself. Writing the song wasn’t enough to get those emotions out, I had to sing them. When I think back, I felt really at ease because I wasn’t worried about being perfect or hitting every note. I just needed to let the feeling out. Michael was amazing throughout the process, recording everything as it came, and in the end, we decided to keep those original vocals from that first day. It’s been a while since then, but now feels like the right time to share it with the world.
Pump It Up Magazine: What’s next for you in 2025—any new projects, performances, or releases?
Alwyn Morrison:
This is the third single I’ve released this year, and I’m still really enjoying the process of experimenting in the studio. I’m not necessarily focused on an album or EP right now, but who knows what will come out of all the material I’ve been working on. Over the past year, I’ve been writing and recording a lot, and I’ve been really selective about which songs I want to bring to life with live instruments and production. I’ve probably recorded close to 20 songs just in the last few months. I love collaborating, so I’m definitely looking forward to working with more musicians in the future. I don’t tend to plan too far ahead. I just take things as they come and see what feels right. But one thing is certain: there’s more music on the way.
