Marvin Gaye’s Lost 1972 Album ‘You’re The Man’ Set For Release

The album was supposed to be the follow-up to his seminal 1971 release What’s Going On.

You’re The Man, the album that was supposed to come after the release of his 1971 classic What’s Going On, is finally being released.

You’re The Man will drop on March 29, only several days before the musician’s birthday on April 2, as Rolling Stone reports. He would’ve been 80 years-old.

Although most of the songs from the album have been released on CD compilations, this is the first time 15 of the project’s 17 tracks will be available on vinyl.

Accompanying the announcement of the album’s release is a new mix of the song “My Last Chance.” Originally recorded around 1972 and revised as “I Love You Secretly” for the Miracles‘ 1973 album Renaissance, “My Last Chance” has been given new life by producer Salaam Remi. Remi, who has produced for Nas and the late Amy Winehouse, also contributed two additional mixes for the album — “Symphony” and “I’d Give My Life for You.”

You’re The Man is available for pre-order digitally and as a double vinyl LP. The physical version of the record includes new liner notes from David Ritz, Gaye’s biographer, who examines “Gaye’s deeply personal internal conflict as a source of creative vigor and emotional burden as he experienced What’s Going On‘s massive success and all that came with it.”
