Interview with Nashmia: Blending Pop, Soul, R&B, and Indie in Her Inspiring Single Butterfly

In this interview, we sit down with Nashmia to explore the inspirations behind her uplifting single, Butterfly. She opens up about her unique blend of Pop, Soul, R&B, and Indie influences, her creative process, and the ways nature and collaboration have shaped her sound.

Pump It Up Magazine: Congrats on Butterfly! It’s such a beautiful, uplifting track. What was going through your mind when you wrote it, and what do you hope people feel when they hear it?

Nashmia: Thank you so much. I am so happy to hear you say that! Butterfly came from a place of reflection and transformation. I wanted to create something that felt light yet powerful, like a release of something beautiful that’s been waiting to emerge. I hope people feel uplifted and encouraged when they hear it—as if they can spread their own wings and rise above whatever’s holding them back. It’s meant to inspire freedom and self-acceptance.

Pump It Up Magazine: Your music has this amazing blend of Pop, Soul, R&B, and Indie. How did you find your sound? Were there any artists or experiences that really shaped the way you create music?

Nashmia: My sound has evolved over time as I’ve explored different genres and discovered what resonates most with me. I grew up listening to a mix of soulful pop artists and R&B, and I love the richness that each genre brings. Artists like Sade and Alicia Keys have been huge influences in shaping my style, as well as the sounds of the natural world around me. Each song I write is like piecing together different influences into something that feels unique to me.

Pump It Up Magazine: A lot of your songs, like Butterfly, feel so personal yet relatable. How do you get into that emotional space when writing? Do you draw from your own life or imagine what others might be feeling too?

Nashmia: I try to write from a place of honesty and vulnerability. Often, I draw from my own life experiences, but I also try to connect with universal emotions that everyone feels—love, loss, joy, and self-discovery. Sometimes it’s like I’m tapping into my own story, but other times I imagine what someone else might be going through. I think that balance between personal and universal emotions is what makes the music relatable.

Pump It Up Magazine: It sounds like collaborating with Jarle Håland and Isabell Aga Engelsen has been a big part of this new chapter for you. How did you connect with them, and what’s the vibe like working together?

Nashmia: Working with Jarle and Isabell has been an amazing experience! We connected through mutual friends in the music scene, and it just felt right from the start. They bring so much creativity and warmth to the process, and we’ve developed a really strong synergy. It’s very collaborative and relaxed, which lets us all express ourselves fully. I feel like our different styles complement each other perfectly, and we push each other to make the best music we can.

Pump It Up Magazine: Living on a gorgeous island in Norway must be inspiring! Does being close to nature and family influence your music? How does it all play into your creative process?

Nashmia: Absolutely! Living surrounded by nature and being close to my family has a huge impact on my music. The peace and beauty of the island really ground me and help me focus on the deeper emotions I want to convey in my songs. I often take long walks by the sea or through the forests when I’m working on new music—it helps me clear my mind and allows new ideas to flow. Nature reminds me of the simplicity and honesty I want to bring into my music, and I think that connection makes everything feel more genuine.
