Leo won, obviously. But this doesn’t mean this year’s Academy Awards were completely predictable. Here are six things worth pondering from the 2016 roll of honour.
1. Many fancied The Revenant because of its late awards season momentum, but early favourite Spotlight clung on to win the big prize, Best Picture.
2. OK, so it wasn’t totally unexpected, but the fact Alejandro G. Iñárritu took home the Best Director trophy for The Revenant the year after he won for Birdman is definitely noteworthy. It’s the first time in 65 years a director has won back-to-back Academy Awards.
3. Lady Gaga and Diane Warren were widely predicted to win the Best Original Song prize for ‘Til It Happens To You’, but they were beaten by Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes, who won for their Bond theme ‘Writing’s On The Wall’. A controversial choice, perhaps?
4. George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road won more Oscars than any other film, taking home six prizes in technical categories. It’s hard to deny that last year’s most breathtaking blockbuster deserved every won of them.
5. Sylvester Stallone was the strong sentimental favourite to win Best Supporting Actor for his incredibly affecting performance in Creed, but he was pipped by well-regarded British thesp Mark Rylance, who took home the Oscar for his work opposite Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s thriller Bridge Of Spies.
6. Alex Garland’s relatively low budget British sci-fi film Ex Machina scored a surprise victory in the Visual Effects category ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Martian. A gratifying triumph for the underdog.
