The official trailer for Universal’s Queen & Slim was released Wednesday morning. The film is directed by Melina Matsoukas and written/produced by Lena Waithe. It stars Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya. This full-length trailer release comes after the teaser for the film was released last month.
The official description for the film: While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a Black man and a Black woman, are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country. As they drive, these two unlikely fugitives will discover themselves and each other in the most dire and desperate of circumstances, and will forge a deep and powerful love that will reveal their shared humanity and shape the rest of their lives.
Chloe Sevigny, Indya Moore, Bokeem Woodbine and Jahi Winston also star. Universal has stateside distribution rights, and the film will be released on November 27, 2019. Production kicked off in January in New Orleans. Shadow And Act visited the set (you can learn more about our time there here) a few months ago.
Waithe is producing through her Hillman Grad Productions, Matsoukas through her De La Revolución Films and James Frey (who bore the film’s original idea and treatment) through his 3BlackDot. Andrew Coles and Michelle Knudsen are also producing. This will be the feature debut for Matsoukas, who is an acclaimed music video director (Rihanna, Beyoncé) who has recently transitioned to television and now film. Her TV credits include Insecure and Master of None. She is helming the pilot for Y: The Last Man at FX and is adapting A Brief History of Seven Killings at Amazon.
