Work is a really important part of life for most of us, and something that most of us would like to be as satisfying as possible. If you are keen to make sure of that, but you keep getting the feeling that something is getting in the way, it’s a good idea to think about some of the things you can do to ensure that you are going to improve that situation as well as possible. To that end, it’s important to know what might be stopping you from working harder.
In this post, we are going to take you through some of the most common culprits that can be the cause of not working as hard as you could. It’s worth being aware of these and looking through them, so you can ensure you are going to give your all in future. All in all, these are going to be hugely important things to be aware of and consider.
Poor Health
This is actually one of the most commonly given reasons for why someone is not giving it their all at work. If you are suffering from poor health in some way or another, this is something that you might want to try and improve and overcome as soon as possible. It is obviously hugely important to make sure you are healthy in general anyway, but when it comes to your work it’s also going to have a considerable effect there.
So it might be worth taking stock of your health and seeing what might be improved. Is your diet not quite what it should be? Are you suffering from an illness that you haven’t yet treated? Whatever it is, this is something you should make sure you are finding solutions for as soon as possible.
Lack Of Sleep
This is tied in with health too, but it’s so important and a common problem that it also deserves a discussion of its own. If you are not getting enough sleep, that is going to sap you of your energy, and you simply won’t be able to bring the same level of commitment to your work. Even just one night of poor sleep can have this effect, so it’s something you should think about if you are going to try and make sure you are working as hard as possible each day at work.

There are usually some pretty simple and quick solutions to a lack of sleep. For instance, you may find that you can improve your sleep quality and length of sleep just by cutting out caffeine – so try not to get into the trap of combating your fatigue with coffee! You should also consider whether your diet is affecting your sleep, and make sure you are getting enough exercise too.
Plus, the simple act of getting to bed early can often suffice here. All in all, lack of sleep is easy enough to solve, so make sure that you do so as soon as you can.
Addiction
It’s very common to have addictions. Many people have at least some kind of bad habit they would rather not have. If you think you might have an addiction of some kind, or at least a dependency, then you have probably noticed that this does get in the way of your work. This is therefore something that you will want to try and overcome as best as you can if you want to work more effectively and harder when you are in the workplace.
A good first step is to try and be honest with your employer about the situation you find yourself in. Tell them what is going on for you. A good employer will be compassionate about it and offer you help. Then you can start looking for assistance to get through your addiction as thoroughly as possible. The best rehabs can help you overcome any addiction surprisingly quickly, so it’s something to think about. The sooner you get over your addiction, the sooner you will be able to bring your all to the workplace, so this is absolutely worth trying to do as soon as possible.
Fear
Very often, a common reason that people don’t quite give their all at work is because they are experiencing some level of fear around what they’re doing. If you feel this way, you might want to try and identify the fear, which means being ruthlessly honest with yourself, and then doing all you can to figure out why it’s there. Then you can start trying to work through it as soon as possible. Of course, that can take a long time, but it’s absolutely worth thinking about.
Fear is usually an indicator that you are holding back and that you don’t think you’re capable. That is understandable, but the sooner you can get through that idea, the better off you will be.
The Wrong Job
Perhaps one of the most common causes of this kind of malaise, however, is that you are simply in the wrong job. In other words, it’s not something that you can feel you put your heart into, and you struggle to get excited or motivated about it. That is all too common, and it’s an experience that most people would agree leads to a poor morale at work. If you think or suspect that this might be the situation you are in, the solution is obviously to find a job that resonates with you more.
That’s tough to do, but you can at least start looking around and see what’s out there. If you do find a job that your gut tells you is better, apply and just see what happens. You’ve got nothing to lose. In this way, you should be able to overcome your problem and ultimately get to a job that you enjoy so much more – which will encourage you to work harder when you are doing it.
