Inspiring Dreams and Positive Energy From California

You’re Stronger Than You Think — Cindy Davis Brings New Life to “Young Hearts Run Free” | Pump it up Magazine | Interview + Music Review

If you’ve ever had to walk away from something—or someone—to protect your peace, this song is for you.

With her soul-stirring new cover of the 1976 anthem “Young Hearts Run Free”, singer-songwriter Cindy Davis delivers more than just a tribute—she offers a bold reminder of freedom, self-worth, and faith.

Originally performed by the legendary Candi Staton, this classic track finds fresh meaning in Cindy’s hands. Blending gospel, R&B, and Motown soul, Cindy’s voice commands your attention from the very first note—smooth, grounded, and full of conviction.

Produced by Motown veteran Michael B. Sutton and released under the independent label The Sound of L.A., the song stays true to its roots while introducing a renewed emotional depth that speaks directly to today’s generation. The production layers are rich and heartfelt, enhancing the message without overshadowing Cindy’s stunning vocal performance.

The background vocals—provided by Michael B. Sutton and his wife, international recording artist Aneessa—wrap around Cindy like a choir of support, lifting the track to a whole new level. The chemistry between this creative trio is undeniable, and it radiates through every harmony.

“This song has always spoken to me,” Cindy shares. “It’s about not settling. It’s about knowing your worth. And in this season of my life, I wanted to sing something that could encourage someone else to keep going, to stay strong, and to walk in their purpose.”

The release is timed perfectly—March 28, 2025, just one day before Cindy’s birthday. She calls it a gift to herself, but listeners everywhere will feel like the ones receiving something special.

Whether you’ve loved this song for decades or are just discovering it for the first time, Cindy Davis’ version is a must-hear. It’s not just a cover—it’s a movement, a message, and a moment of clarity.

Pump It Up Magazine: Cindy, congratulations on the release of “Young Hearts Run Free”! What inspired you to cover this classic song?

Cindy Davis: Oh wow!! Young Hearts Run Free is such a timeless classic, originally sung by the legendary Candi Staton. It’s been one of my absolute favorites from the 1970s—not just for its catchy rhythm, but for the powerful message it carries. It speaks to the heartache we’ve all felt at some point—betrayal, deception, and being taken for granted. No matter the decade, the facts in those lyrics still resonate.

Pump It Up Magazine: This song carries a powerful message of freedom and empowerment. How does it resonate with your personal journey and musical career?

Cindy Davis: Now don’t get me wrong—I absolutely believe in love and marriage. But let’s just say… I’ve kissed more than a few frogs in my day! That’s why the message Candi Staton laid down in the ’70s still hits hard today: ladies, don’t be in a rush to walk down that aisle. Know your worth, keep your crown straight, and wait for the one who deserves you. Take your time, protect your peace, and don’t settle. Queens don’t chase—we choose.

Pump It Up Magazine: You’ve worked with Michael B. Sutton and The Sound of L.A. on this track. What was the creative process like, and how did his influence shape the final version?

Cindy Davis: Working with Michael is easy like a Sunday morning—super chill, no ego, just good vibes and great music. I’d been dreaming about doing my own version of Young Hearts Run Free for years, and when I mentioned it to him, he lit up. He was all in from the jump.

I flew out to L.A. from Houston in September 2024 to work at The Sound of L.A., and by the time I got there, he already had the track laid out and ready. He’s a night owl when it comes to creating, so we got into the studio late that evening and started working on the vocals.

This song is not easy to sing—but Michael brought his expertise with the vocal arrangement, and that made all the difference. We found the pocket, built the harmonies, and it just came to life. And the cherry on top? We released it on my birthday—March 29th. Couldn’t have asked for a better gift to myself.

Pump It Up Magazine: The track features background vocals from Anissa Sutton and Michael B. Sutton, along with a talented group of musicians. What was the recording experience like?

Cindy Davis: We like to joke that myself, Anissa, and Michael are the dynamic trio—I’m on lead vocals, Michael is the mastermind producer, arranger, and background vocalist, and his wife Anissa… a talented vocalist on background.

Before the session began, the instrumental for Young Hearts Run Free was already playing—and it instantly set the tone. The vibe was right. The energy was warm. I could feel something special was about to happen. Anissa started filming the whole experience, which added this fun, documentary-style layer to the session. Her energy and support made it easy to just relax, be present, and let the music take over.

Pump It Up Magazine: Your birthday is coming up on March 29! How does it feel to celebrate with a brand-new single? Any special plans?

Cindy Davis: I’m just looking forward to spending time with my family, enjoying my favorite dinner, and simply celebrating the beauty of life. Grateful to God for it all!

Pump It Up Magazine: Your music blends gospel, R&B, and Motown influences. How does “Young Hearts Run Free” fit into your style and future projects?

Cindy Davis: That’s the true beauty of art—it’s limitless. I’ve always been an artist at heart. Whether it’s painting on canvas, sketching, or even building furniture, creating is simply part of who I am.

Over the years, especially through my time interviewing legendary music artists, I’ve seen how the industry often tries to box creativity into labels and categories. But I’ve come to believe that every note, every melody, comes from God. It’s not about the label—it’s about the message. Music should move you, uplift you, and speak to your soul—no matter the genre.

Pump It Up Magazine: The song originally became an anthem for independence and self-love. What do you hope listeners take away from your version?

Cindy Davis: The message of the song remains the same—timeless and true. My hope is that it sparks reflection and feels thought-provoking. That it reminds people of their value, their strength, and their ability to choose freedom and self-love over settling.

Pump It Up Magazine: You’ve had a successful journey in the industry. What key moments have shaped you as an artist?

Cindy Davis: Thank you so much. It’s definitely been a journey—full of lessons, growth, and unforgettable moments. As a host, I had the privilege of interviewing so many legendary artists. Hearing their stories and wisdom firsthand really shaped the way I see artistry—not just as performance, but as purpose.

What’s inspired me most through it all is the reminder that it’s never too late to chase your calling. Dreams don’t expire—they evolve. And when you stay true to who you are, your purpose will always find its voice.

Pump It Up Magazine: How has your faith and personal life influenced your music and message?

Cindy Davis: For me, it’s not just about having faith in faith—it’s about having faith in God. With that foundation, my deepest desire is to be a vessel for His glory—someone who inspires love, brings awareness, and carries a message of hope.
